Our garden is located on West 48th
Street in Manhattan between 9th and 10th avenues. The
garden was created in 1977 by Hell’s Kitchen residents
who cleared out the rubble from a long-vacant lot and
began planting it with flowers, herbs, fruits, and
vegetables. The garden is organized into two main
sections: the Front Garden and the Back Garden. The
Front Garden is open to the public, keyholders as well
as visitors who may ask to be let in if the gate is
closed. When visiting the garden, please respect our
rules, posted over the trash bins by the front gate
and here under Rules & Bylaws. It’s important to
remember that the garden is not a playground; we love
animals, but dogs and cats (and similar pets) are not
allowed; and courteous behavior is expected.
For gatherings of 10 or more, permission from
the Steering Committee is required. Click on
our events policy below for more information. Please
be kind to the garden and the environment by taking
your trash with you and properly recycling newspapers,
bottles, cans, plastics, and aluminum at your home or
office.

licensed by the New York City Parks Department through
