flower_button3 Composting at the Garden

The Clinton Community Garden runs a community food-scrap composting operation for most of the year. Starting April 3, 2010, composting volunteers will again collect compost from neighborhood residents on Saturdays from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. Changes to the schedule will be posted on the garden gate. We accept fruit and veggie food scraps as well as egg shells, loose tea (remove from tea bag), and coffee grounds.

What can't go in?
Baked goods (even if organic), pasta and rice and other grains. Oily and/or cooked veggies. Any scraps that are so far gone they are liquid and stinky.

Always hand your compost over to a volunteer. Sometimes people hang bags of compost on the garden gate, toss it over the fence, or leave it in the back. If you can't make it to the compost collection, please don't do this! We don't want to give rats more reasons to hang out in the garden, and coming upon a bag of rotting food is an unpleasant surprise for gardeners and compost volunteers.

Because we have limited space, compost collection priority is given to those living within our catchment area. We cannot accept compost from restaurants and other businesses. If you plan to bring compost to the garden, please put your egg shells, tea, and coffee remains in a separate container. Banana peels, corn husks, and any other large, tough scraps should be cut with scissors. Please come to drop off compost before the last 10 minutes.

Back gardeners may compost vegetation from their plots in the four-bin compost duplex on the garden's east side. Please read the guidelines before placing anything in the bin.
